30 consecutive days waking up early challenge now completed.

Today is the 30th day in a row that I have been up at 5am. Since the last update it has all been smooth sailing right through to the end. Even the switch to daylight saving here in Sydney didn’t faze me even though I forgot to adjust my watch. My iPhone which acts as my alarm automatically adjusts itself to daylight saving and had me covered.

I am happy with the result as I have gained a couple of hours each day to do things I would normally be to pushed for time to complete. I also have noticed my energy levels are much higher in the morning than they have been previously.

I am also considering some other sleep type challenges such as something to do with lucid dreaming or polyphasic sleep. In regards to whether or not I will keep rising at 5am well I think I may adjust my wake up time to 5:30am or 6am as I would like a bit more awake time in the evenings.

Let me know what you thought about the experiment and if you have tried the strategy yourself?

Thank you everyone for the comments.

The Secret Law of Attraction – Is it the real deal? :The definitive personal experiment

Introduction and Summary

“The secret”, or “the law of attraction” has exploded into the self help industry since the release of The Secret movie in 2006. All over the world the secret teachers have claimed that this law of attraction is the answer to all woes and that if you master and apply the simple concepts than you can be do or have anything you wish. A very lucrative proposition isn’t it? But does this stuff actually work or is it a bunch of charlatan marketing designed to persuade people needing to change their lives to invest their money in books and programs that does not deliver its promises?

There has been a lot of debate regarding the legitimacy of the LOA and its promises with split opinions with large numbers of people claiming it  has enabled them to manifest all kinds of things they have wanted and masses of others who claim it has not helped them at all. To those who claim that the LOA does not work for them the LOA teachers have a simple consistent rebuttal. Either your not understanding and applying the principles properly or your giving up to early for anything to good to manifest and your doubt in itself guarantees your failure. However what if you could keep track of your performance on each of the LOA principles at regular intervals throughout the day everyday and use that feedback  to keep your thoughts and emotions at the levels required for the LOA to work? If you could measure them and keep them at a high level than you should begin to manifest positive things over a given period of time. That is of course if the LOA is the real deal.

This is the Law of Attraction Experiment.  This is from what I understand the most in depth and controlled personal experiment undertaken and made public regarding the Law of Attraction. In this experiment I will be putting the secret concepts to the test by applying the concepts and actually measuring my performance in how well I am applying them throughout the day every day using readily available technology for an initial period of 90 days. The aim will be to keep my performance of applying  the key concepts and activities of the LOA to the highest  level which should result in the manifestation of a range of intentions  that vary in size from small to massive. My intentions are as follows

Small

  • Mosley tribes pilot sunglasses
  • Learn to Lucid dream
  • Packet of Darrell Lee caramel snows
  • Tennis Ball

Medium

  • New Consulting job
  • 50 inch shoulders 31 inch waist
  • Trip to USA

Large

  • Mansion
  • Mercedes Benz CL65 AMG
  • Corvette
  • Harley custom
  • 100000 visits
  • $1,000,000

Massive

  • 1 billion dollar company
  • Best selling author 100 million sold

Research

In preparation for this experiment I have consulted many popular materials pertaining to the LOA. All the concepts utilised in this experiment pertaining to the LOA come from the following materials.

Abraham Hicks Books

The Secret (Extended Edition) DVD & The Secret book

Beyond the Secret DVD

You Can Heal Your Life, the movie, expanded version – Louise Hays

What the Bleep Do We Know!? DVD

Conversations with God : An Uncommon Dialogue (Book 1)

The Attractor Factor: 5 Easy Steps for Creating Wealth (or Anything Else) From the Inside Out

Steve Pavlina – how things manifest blog post

Key concepts and actions

From the research of the above materials I have identified 6 variables relating to the mental actions required for the law of attraction to manifest what you want. Each of them is briefly described below. These are the variables I will be measuring using a likert scale from -10 to +10 intermittently for 30 minute periods throughout the day for a period of 90 days. The variables are

  1. 1. Clear controlled intention/s

Clear controlled intention/s is a variable I have created to represent the teaching throughout the LOA material that to manifest what you want you have to hold a clear intention.  The common teaching throughout the LOA materials is that you will manifest your predominant thoughts. The rational for measuring this variable is that if the LOA is a universal law than if I can measure the variable and use the feedback to become more conscious of my intentions and keep them clear and controlled than things on my vision board should start manifesting. Clear controlled intentions is measured on a likert scale from -10 to +10 with -10 being unclear scattered contradictory intentions over the last 30 minutes and +10 being very clear controlled intentions over the last 30 minutes .

  1. 2. Positive thoughts

The LOA research material says that if you have negative predominant thoughts than you will attract negative outcomes and if you have positive predominant thoughts you will attract positive outcomes. Needless to say if I measure how positive my thoughts are for every 30-minute period and use the feedback to keep my thoughts at the positive end of the likert scale than again I should be manifesting positive outcomes. Positive thoughts will be measured on a likert scale from -10 to +10 with -10 being completely negative thoughts over the last 30 minutes and +10 completely positive thoughts over the last 30 minutes.

  1. 3. Positive Emotions

Positive emotions are mentioned in all the LOA materials as being correlated to thought positivity. The common teaching in the LOA material is that of you are experiencing negative emotions than you are thinking negatively and need to change your predominant thoughts. This variable should be correlated with positive thoughts. Again if I measure how positive my emotions are for every 30-minute period and use the feedback to keep my emotions at the positive end of the likert scale than again I should be manifesting things that I want. Positive thoughts will be measured on a likert scale from -10 to +10 with -10 being completely negative emotions over the last 30 minutes and +10 completely positive emotions over the last 30 minutes.

  1. 4. Faith

Faith again is in important factor mentioned in the LOA materials. The materials state that it is important to have faith that your intentions will manifest as if you have doubtful thoughts than your are putting out the intention that what you want will not manifest and that will end up being the outcome you experience.  As with the other variables in this experiment if I can keep my faith at the positive end of the -10 to +10 likert scale than I should see manifestations of things I want.

  1. 5. Gratitude

Gratitude is referred to in the secret movie and other LOA materials. The LOA rational for the importance of gratitude is that if you are grateful for things in your life and focus on them than you will attract for of the what you are grateful for or thing related to what you are grateful for.  So using this rational if I am able to keep my level of gratitude at the positive end of the -10 to +10 likert scale than I should see manifestations of things I want.

  1. 6. Alignment with true self/Vibration match

Vibrational match or alignment with your true self is a concept mentioned extensively within the LOA material.  What it means is to bring yourself in line with the person you will be when you be do or have the particular things you are trying to manifest. For example if you are a millionaire how do you feel about money? Would receiving $10,000 feel the same for someone earning a million dollars a year as it would for someone earning $30,000? Alignment with true self/ vibrational match is having the thoughts, emotions and beliefs that you would have if you had the things you are trying to manifest. So applying this concept keeping my level of alignment and vibrational match at the positive end of the -10 to +10 likert scale than I should see manifestations of things I want.

Materials & Method

Vision board

Vision boards are talked about a lot in the movie “the secret” and I will be utilising this concept as part of this experiment. A vision board is a space in which you post objects of what you want to manifest such pictures, notes and other things of or related to things you want to manifest. In my case I am using a pin board, which hangs on my wall beside my bed. On the board I have put pictures and notes of things I want to manifest. For the purpose of the experiment I have put a range of things on the board which people are likely to perceive as being from small to large goals/intentions or easy to extremely difficult. The below are the intentions I have on my vision board divided into rough categories of small to massive. I have given a range of small to massive intentions as it is one of the teachings that something small is as easy to manifest as something big and I wanted to see if that effect was true.

Law of Attraction Vision Board

Law of Attraction Vision Board

Small

  • Mosley tribes pilot sunglasses
  • Packet of Darrell Lee caramel snows
  • Tennis Ball

Medium

  • New Consulting job
  • 50 inch shoulders 31 inch waist
  • Trip to USA

Large

  • Mansion
  • Mercedes Benz CL65 AMG
  • Corvette
  • Harley custom
  • 100000 visits
  • $1,000,000

Massive

  • 1 billion dollar company
  • Best selling author 100 million sold

I will be using this vision board to meditate on my intentions twice daily. Once in the morning just after waking up and again just before going to sleep.

Concepts and performance measurement.

The iPhone is a great tool which can be used for an infinite number of purposes with the continuous creation of new applications at the iTunes app store. In this experiment I will be using the alarm function of the iphone as well as the application Life Log available from iTunes.  Life Log is an application that allows you to create and measure variables much like a psychometric survey. For the purpose of this experiment I have created 6 variables that I will be measuring. I will use the alarm function to set an alarm to go off every 30 minutes which will prompt me to score each of the 6 variables each with a likert scale for the period of the previous 30 minutes. The 6 variables are outlined below.

  1. Clear controlled intentions
  2. Positive thoughts
  3. Positive emotions
  4. Faith
  5. Gratitude
  6. Alignment with true self/Vibration match

Method steps

  1. Every morning I will begin with using my vision board to meditate on each of my intentions.
  2. Every 30 minutes throughout the day I will be prompted by an alarm to score my performance on each variable for the preceding 30 minute interval.
  3. I will use the feedback from my score to raise my performance in the next interval or keep it at a high level.
  4. Every evening before bed I will again use my vision board to meditate on each of my intentions.
  5. If I keep my performance on each of the variables at a high level I should see some results.

Beanpole to Buff – Body building for a hard gainer

I will be starting work on this goal soon, most likely when the the new consulting job goal is completed. Follow me on twitter to be notified when this goals jumps off.

Goal Description

Ever since pre-school I have always been a skinny  and usually one of the smaller guys in my class with the metabolism that most who struggle to keep weight off would find envious. On the flip side however although I can eat as much junk food as I like with no weight gain consequences I have always wanted to develop a bigger more muscular physique. It was not until I reached university that I had some success putting on muscle working out in the uni gym. Although i had some success I did not reach my ideal size because I could not get enough calories into my diet. This changed however after I left University and I was able to get the right diet combined with a workout routine and I was able to develop a well proportioned physique at my ideal body weight of 75 kg’s (165lbs).

Did I keep the gains on? I kept  in on for a over year until the financial crisis became I real threat to the small consulting business I worked in. After that my entire time and focus was dedicated on keeping the business afloat and slowly I undid all the good work I put into building the body I wanted. The good news however is that I know I can do it again and even push things even further than before and so that is what I plan to do.

Something interesting I have come across recently in some of my research is the ideal body proportions which women find attractive. I initially stumbled across this at a website called the Adonis Index. The Adonis index focuses on the optimal ratio between the circumference of your shoulders and the circumference of your waist which is a ratio of 1.63. This “optimal” ratio has come about due to a number of studies which looked at which physiques woman found most attractive. The studies looked at all kinds of proportions and symmetries in the male body and the most significant factor which attributed most women to find physically attractive was the ratio of waist to shoulders with the optimum ratio being 1.63. Since reading about this I have wanted to see what it is like to have the so called “golden ratio.”

The Adonis Index website sells a product with a workout plan and diet plan to achieve the ratio however because I have experience working out for a while and know how my body responds to my diet and workout plans I am confident that I will probably achieve my goal quicker sticking to what I have had success with. I will be posting everything I do in my workouts and diet recording everything in workout and diet tracker applications for my iPhone which hopefully I can upload to the blog. To reach the golden ratio of 1.63 I will need to develop a shoulder circumference of 50″ inches and a waist of 31″ inches.

Smart evaluation

Specific:
I will have completed this goal when I have a 5o inch shoulder circumference and a 31 inch waist circumference.

Measurable
I will be measuring shoulder, waist, biceps, thigh, and chest circumference as well as weight, calorie carb and protein intake
and all my workout stats.

Achievable
Yes

Realistic
Yes

Timely
Will be determined upon commencement

Strategy

I will be attacking this goal in two phases.

Phase 1: Stack on weight
Phase 1 will consist of me stacking on weight both muscle and fat to gain size. I will do this with a high calorie, carb and protein diet combined with a bodybuilding workout plan. The specifics of the phase 1 plan I will detail on commencement.

Phase 2: Cut and shape
Phase 2 will consist of cutting and shaping my gains from phase 1 into  a 50 inch shoulder circumference and a 31 inch waist circumference. I will do this with a change of diet to a high protien, low calorie and low carb diet and a tweaked workout regimen. Again the specifics will be detailed at jumpoff.

Updates

I will be starting work on this goal soon, most likely when the the new consulting job goal is completed. Follow me on twitter to be notified when this goals jumps off.

Wake up early (5am) for 30 days update days:15-21

Consecutive days up early (5am) score so far: 14

I am almost at the half way mark now with 14 consecutive days when I have woken up early at 5am. I have noticed that it has become progressively easier to wake up at 5am and my body seems to have fully adapted to the sleeping pattern. I am still using the alarms as to wake me up as before as although it has become easy to wake up at 5am It still takes me 5 – 10 minutes to fully wake up out of the initial morning drowsiness where I am at risk of falling back to sleep. The last 7 days I have been going to bed consistently between 10pm and midnight every night. I generally just decide to go to bed when I start to feel tired and do not have a set “bedtime” that I stick to. I am very confident now that I will have a straight run through to 30 consecutive days up early at 5am.

During the last week I have also had a couple of very brief lucid dreams prior to waking up which after doing a little research I have seen a lot of claims that it is supposed  to be possible to learn how to induce and hold a lucid dream for much longer periods. This has me curious and I am considering setting some sort of lucid dreaming goal when I have completed the wake up early challenge.

Goal #2: Get a new consulting job

Description

Looking for a new job during the aftermath of the financial crisis? I have set myself the goal to secure a new job during this challenging time and potentially challenge myself to move in new directions. Before and during the financial crisis I have worked in Australia’s finance industry as an Investment Banking and Funds Management headhunter. For my first job it has been pretty exciting. In the past 2 and a half years I have done everything from rep  a Donald Trumps Apprentice show stars to hob nob with some of Sydney’s most successful Investment Banking and Funds Management captains. An area I would really like to move into is change management and remuneration strategy within organisations although I am open to the direction of my next career move.

Smart

Specific : Sign employment contract for new consulting position

Measurable : I will know that I have completed this goal when I have signed a new employment contract.

Achievable : Yes

Realistic : Yes

Timely : 3 months, by Jan 1st

Strategy

So far I am employing two strategies to achieve this goal. The first is to target companies that I wish to work for and develop a proposal targeted to them which explains how I will be of value to them. So far this strategy has yielded 2 interviews with companies I had been really interested in working for. Unfortunately both times I missed out on the role to another candidate however I am confident that If i keep doing this I will eventually secure a role. I may do an article going into detail of how to put together a proposal with the objective of securing a job at a later stage because I think it will be quite helpful to people searching for a particular job.

The second strategy I am employing is the standard tact of applying to job ads online in my case on SEEK.com.au Australia’s largest online job advertiser.

Wake up early (5am) for 30days straight: days 12-14

consecutive days up at 5am = 7

Today marks 7 days straight which I have been up at 5 am just before sunrise. While passing this milestone I have not had any issues although I have taken brief 1 hour naps the last 2 days in the afternoon because I stretched the limit of how late I could stay up the last few nights (past midnight). So far my optimal time for going to sleep seems to be just after 11pm although when I feel tired varies from night to night. Things are going so well that I am not sure if I will have much content for updates so I may post updates for this goal less frequently and add on some new goals/challenges. I am adding a new page for new goal and challenge suggestions  from readers/viewers which I will link here. I might select a few suggestions and do a vote for which one I should do.

Wake up early (5am) for 30days straight: days 9-11

Consecutive days up early score today= 4

Today is the 4th consecutive day I have been up at 5am. My new strategy seems to work great as the last 4 days I have got up effortlessly. As before when my alarm first wake up my morning brain screams out  to go back to sleep and I hit snooze however I cannot and after 15 minutes of going through the motions of hitting snooze as soon as my alarm goes off every minute I am wide awake.

At the moment I am going to bed between 11pm and 12pm which means I am getting 5-6 hours of sleep a night.  Although the on days 8-9  I was a little tired during the day I was surprised at how energetic I was. Even more surprising the last 2 days I have not been tired at all and I hope this continues for as long as I do this as it will mean a massive jump in productivity for me.

I have really enjoyed the extra hours in the morning and have been able to get a lot of things done in that time. I also feel a lot happier in the mornings as there is no rush to get ready and get out the door which was the norm for me previously.

Wake up early Days 5-8

Consecutive days up early score today = 1

I am now up to day 8 and I am having some doubts regarding my original strategy and have changed things up a little and think I have have hit or close to hitting the right path. My morning brain still wants to stay in bed and overpowers any conditioning from my wake up early conditioning routine.

On day 5 I was up late the night before and the next day I hit snooze and it was all over. I went back to sleep and I slept in until 9am. On day 6 I woke up at 5am by using a new strategy that popped into my head just before going to bed the night before. For my alarm I use my mobile phone’s (iPhone) built in alarm to wake me up. The alarm has a snooze function which when pressed switches off the alarm and sets it to go off again 10 minutes later. I find that after I wake up and my morning brain fog convinces me getting up is not a good idea I hit snooze and fall back to sleep and then 10 minutes later I am no more awake then when i first woke up and so hit snooze again and this cycle can go on for an hour or several depending how tired I am. In my phone however I can set up multiple alarms which allows me to set as many wake up alarms as I want. So what I did was set an alarm at 5am and then another at 5:01, another at 5:03 another at 5:05, others at 5:07, 5:10, 5:13, 5;15. This causes a constant barrage of alarms that ensure I cannot get back to sleep at all no matter how many times I hit snooze. After ten to fifteen minutes of this I am definitely awake enough to get out of bed and start my morning routine.

On day 7 however I slept in again until 10am because I had neglected to set all of my new alarms that i had created to repeat every day so I only had the one alarm so like before I hit snooze and then next thing I know it is 10am. Today on day 8 however I did not make the same mistake and made sure all my alarms were set to repeat everyday and also added new alarms so that there would be an alarm go off every minute from 5am to 5:15am. It worked like a charm and I woke up and stayed awake at 5am. If I hit snooze on the 5:05 am alarm it then gets set to go off at 5:16 If I hit snooze on the 5:06 alarm it then goes off again at 5:17 and 5:18, :19, :20 and so on until I turn off all the alarms. This creates a never ending barrage that never lets me drift off again.

I am keen to see how this goes for the rest of the week and if this is the winning strategy that gets me over the finish line of 30 consecutive days. I will update again over the weekend.

Strategy update: Wake up early (5am) for 30 days straight

In addition today I have also added another tool to my strategy. As my alarm I use my mobile phone’s built in alarm to wake me up which has a snooze function that when pressed switches off the alarm and sets it to go off again 10 minutes later. I find that after I wake up and my morning brain fog convinces me getting up is not a good idea I hit snooze and fall back to sleep and then 10 minutes later I am no more awake and so hit snooze again and this cycle can go on for an hour or more depending on how tired I am. This causes a constant barrage of alarms that ensure I cannot get back to sleep at all no matter how many times I hit snooze. After 10 to 15 minutes of this I am definitely awake enough to get out of bed and start my morning routine.
